Bathroom renovation plumbing cost: realistic 2026 numbers from real Melbourne jobs
Plumbing is rarely the line item that blows a bathroom budget — but it is the line item that, when underquoted, leads to leaks behind tiles, soft floors and a renovation you have to redo in 5 years. Pay properly, demand a written scope, and you'll never think about it again.
Here's what bathroom plumbing actually costs as part of a Melbourne renovation in 2026, separated from tiling, cabinetry and waterproofing so you can compare like with like.
What 'plumbing' covers in a bathroom reno
Demolition and removal of existing fixtures and pipework, drainage relocation (toilet, vanity, shower, bath, floor waste), water supply re-rough-in, hot , hot & cold tail-outs at correct heights, isolation valves, fit-off of new tapware/showerheads/toilet/bath/vanity, gas connection (if you're moving HWS), pressure testing, and a written compliance certificate.
Typical 2026 plumbing-only costs
| Scope | Typical 2026 price | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| En-suite refresh (same layout) | $3,200 – $5,400 | Like-for-like swap |
| Standard bathroom (new layout) | $5,800 – $9,500 | Move toilet + shower |
| Bathroom + laundry combo | $8,500 – $14,500 | Including new floor waste |
| Bathroom with new HWS | +$1,800 – $3,800 | Add to any of above |
| Cast-iron stack removal | +$1,800 – $3,500 | Older homes |
| In-wall cistern install | +$650 – $1,200 | Per toilet |
The renovation upgrades that pay back
Mini stop-valves at every fixture. About $60 extra per fixture; saves you turning off the whole house when a tap drips.
Re-running hot water in PEX-A. Faster hot water at the tap, fewer joints in the wall.
Recessed cistern (in-wall). Looks premium, frees floor space, easy to service if specced correctly.
Pressure-balanced shower mixer. No more scalding when the toilet flushes.
Where the budget surprises hide
Old cast-iron stack. Still common in 1920s–1960s homes. If we cut into it, it often has to come out completely. Add $1,800–$3,500.
Off-square slab penetrations. Moving a toilet 200mm sometimes needs a slab cut and concrete patch.
Mismatched waste sizes. European baths/vanities frequently use 40mm wastes; Australian standard is 50mm. Conversion fittings cost time.
HWS undersized for the new shower. A rainhead with 12L/min flow exposes a tired 135L electric unit. Plan for an upgrade.
How to read a bathroom plumbing quote
Insist on three line items: rough-in, fit-off, and HWS work. A flat 'plumbing $9,500' figure makes it impossible to compare quotes — and impossible to know what's missing.
Frequently asked
Q. How long is the plumbing on site?
Typically 3–5 visits over a 4–6 week reno: demo day, rough-in (post-frame), pre-tile inspection, fit-off, and final commissioning.
Q. Do I need a separate waterproofer?
Waterproofing is a separate licensed trade in Victoria. We coordinate but don't do it ourselves — beware anyone who offers both.
Q. Should I keep the existing fixtures?
Reusing toilets, baths and vanities to save money usually backfires. Old wax seals, perished gaskets and corroded waste fittings cause callbacks.
