Burst pipe? Do these 4 things before the plumber arrives

A burst pipe can flood a home with thousands of litres in under an hour. While you wait for us, do these four things in order.

1. Turn off the water at the mains. The mains tap is usually at the front of the property near the water meter.

2. Turn off the electricity at the switchboard if water is anywhere near power outlets, lights or appliances.

3. Open all taps to drain remaining pressure from the system — this stops the burst pipe pumping more water.

4. Move valuables, take photos for insurance, and put down towels to slow the spread.
