What plumbing actually costs in Melbourne

$55 flat between 7am and 5pm, Monday to Friday. That covers a licensed plumber to your door, a Site Inspection and a written fixed-price quote before any work starts. If you go ahead with the job, the $55 is credited toward the total — so you're not paying for it twice.

$185 flat for Saturday and Sunday between 7am and 5pm. Same Site Inspection, same written fixed-price quote, same hourly rate and parts pricing as a weekday job — only the call-out portion changes.

$275 flat after 5pm on weekdays and for weekend after-hours call-outs, including public holidays. One rate, no sliding scales, no 'late-night surcharge' added once we arrive.

No. Genuine 24/7 emergencies — burst pipes, gas leaks, sewer overflows, flooding — are dispatched at whichever of the three call-out rates applies at the time. We don't run a separate 'emergency tier' designed to gouge you because something failed at 2am.

Only the $55 weekday call-out is deducted from the final invoice if you proceed with the repair. The $185 weekend and $275 after-hours fees are not deducted — they cover the premium of getting a licensed plumber to you outside standard hours. If you decide not to go ahead, the call-out covers our travel, time on site and the written quote we leave with you.

No. The $55 / $185 / $275 fees apply across our full service area — Forest Hill, Box Hill, Glen Waverley, Ringwood, Croydon, Rowville, all the way out through Knox, Maroondah and the Yarra Ranges. No travel surcharges by suburb.

We'll tell you on the phone before we dispatch. Mon–Fri 7am–5pm is $55. Saturday and Sunday 7am–5pm is $185. Anything after 5pm on a weekday, weekend after-hours or a public holiday is $275. No grey areas, no fees added once we're on site.

Plumbing isn't like buying a coffee. Two jobs that sound identical on the phone — 'fix a blocked toilet' or 'replace a hot water unit' — can take 30 minutes or 3 hours depending on what we find on site. The ranges shown are based on the Victorian market average for a typical job, so you know roughly what to budget. The fixed price is locked in writing once we've physically seen the job — never before.

Access is the single biggest variable. A leaking tap under an open vanity is a 20-minute job. The same tap behind a tiled wall, in a second-storey ensuite, with no isolation valve fitted, can take 2 hours plus a tiler. Other access factors that move the estimate: parking distance from the job, narrow side gates for relining gear, ceiling/subfloor crawl space, and whether the water main shut-off is accessible. We always show you what we see and explain the access impact before we quote.

We fit parts that have proper Australian warranties — Caroma, Rheem, Rinnai, Reece, Methven, Dorf. They cost more upfront but typically last 2–3× longer than the unbranded alternatives sold on eBay or by discount suppliers. On a hot water unit replacement, the parts choice alone can move the estimate by $1,000–$2,000. We'll always show you 2–3 options at different price points (budget / mid / premium) before you decide — never assume the cheapest is best, and never push the most expensive.

Some work is legally required to come with a Compliance Certificate — gas fitting, hot water system installs, backflow prevention, and any work on the main sewer line. The certificate itself isn't free: it covers the licensed tradesperson's time, the VBA submission, and the audit liability we carry for 6 years under the Victorian Building Authority. It also protects your home insurance if anything ever fails. For non-compliant work, your insurer can refuse a claim — so this isn't optional, it's built into every applicable estimate.

About 1 in 5 jobs reveals something we couldn't see from the outside — old lead-jointed copper, non-standard pipe sizes, previous DIY repairs, corrosion at the wall plate, or asbestos in older Eastern Suburbs homes (common in pre-1985 builds across Box Hill, Blackburn, Ringwood). When that happens, we stop, take photos, show you on the spot, and re-quote in writing. You always decide whether to continue before any extra work or extra cost happens. No surprises on the invoice — ever.

It's a 4-step process every time: (1) we arrive, isolate water/gas if needed, and inspect the actual job — not just the symptom. (2) We take photos of anything relevant (corrosion, access, existing parts) and show them to you. (3) We write a fixed-price quote on our tablet covering labour, parts brand options, compliance, and any access work — itemised so you can see exactly what you're paying for. (4) You sign (or decline) before we touch a single tool. If you decline, you only owe the call-out fee ($55 weekday / $185 weekend / $275 after-hours).

You pay less. The fixed-price quote we sign on site is the maximum — if we open up the wall and find the leak is a 5-minute fix instead of an hour's work, we adjust the invoice down. We'd rather have you call us next time than save $80 by holding you to a higher number you'd already approved.

For very simple jobs (tap washer, toilet flush valve, blocked basin) we'll often give a tighter range over the phone — but not a fixed price, because we still haven't seen it. For anything involving hot water, gas, drains beyond the fixture, or anything inside a wall, the only honest answer is: 'estimate now, fixed quote on arrival.' Anyone who locks in a fixed price sight-unseen is either inflating it to cover themselves, or about to hit you with extras.
