Dealing with a Burst Pipe Emergency
If you have the misfortune to experience a burst pipe, it’s vital the water is stopped quickly, and repairs are undertaken without delay to restore your system. There are certain steps you need to take and things we will do to put everything right.
- Turn off the water at the water shut-off valve so you stop the flow from the burst pipe. If you don’t know where the valve is or it is too stiff to move, give us a call and we’ll do it for you. If the burst is near electrics, you should turn off the electricity supply since electricity and water together react badly.
- Turn on a tap to get the remaining water out of the system and relieve the pressure.
- Call us so we can come out and repair the pipe. Before we arrive (we won’t be long), you can do some things to improve the situation.
- Use a mop and bucket to clean up the water. This will help the property to dry out quicker and prevent mould from forming.
- Turn up your heating, if still available, to aid the drying process. Leave internal doors open so the warm air circulates better.
- Apply a temporary patch to the leak to prevent more water from coming out. Do this by placing rubber over the broken pipe, adding a block of wood to spread the pressure evenly and then holding both in place with a suitable clamp.
- Once we arrive in response to your call, we will undertake a permanent repair of the broken pipe. We will:
- drain the damaged section of the pipe
- cut out the leaking area to leave only undamaged pipe
- prepare a repair sleeve and clean the outside of the pipe
- brush flux onto the repair sleeve and both ends of the pipe
- slide the repair sleeve over both ends of the pipe and centre it so that at least half an inch of pipe is inside the sleeve at each end
- solder the joint, ensuring sufficient solder wire melts into the joint to completely fill it and make a solid connection
- clean the immediate area.
